Austrian Succession Test #3: New and Improved
After four years, War of Austrian Succession is nearing completion! Please come help test it so that I can perfect the balance!
It would be very helpful if we could have no NMRs for the first few phases especially. http://lab.diplomail.ru/board.php?gameID=64

Imperium without the river rule.
I would like we playtested this plain option for that variant: the Imperium map without any river rule.

Better call in players who have played the river rule, to feel the difference. If the players approve the change, we could dare proposing it for permanent change in vdip.

Before I make the PHP maps and get it on this lab, I'm trying to get some feedback regarding balancing.

While I have tried to make the map as balanced as possible, there may still be some glaring issues I haven't spotted that will severely harm a nation's performance (such as North Africa in WW4v6.2). To make this less likely, I tried to guarantee that every nation (barring any major tactical errors or year 1 coalitions) can begin year 2 with 5-7 supply centers.

Information about the map:
573 land/island territories
183 sea territories
756 total territories
277 supply centers
158 starting supply centers

The rules as they are:
1. After the chaotic 2020 election, the country fractured into a many-sided civil war. The game begins in Autumn 2020 with a build phase.

2. There are neutral SCs within state boundaries. These are marked with a solid-dot supply center with a neutral box around them.

3. The number of SCs a state starts with are determined by its population (indirectly through # of electoral college votes). States with less than 20 electors start with 3 SCs, states with 20-30 electors start with 4 SCs, and states with more than 30 electors start with 5 SCs.

4. The game is build-anywhere.

5. A unit may be ordered to transform from an army to a fleet or vice versa at any coastal SC (rivers count!) as long as it is not attacked that season.

6. Island territories with their borders at sea are considered coastal territories, but they can also be used to convoy.

7. The oceans and great lakes are divided up into sealanes, which obey the same rules as in the Mars and WW4: Sealanes variants.

8. There are several strait crossings where armies and fleets can move directly between 2 territories that aren't adjacent by land. These are marked with a maroon line.

9. Fleets can move along and across rivers, although the rivers themselves are not considered territories. They do not impede land movement.

10. There are several territories that appear in multiple areas of the map. These are marked with arrow icons between their parts. In addition, YUK is adjacent to SSK and ABT.

11. The Four Corners Monument is the only point on the map where 4 provinces meet. At this point, units CAN move diagonally.

12. When the US govt. collapsed, the Mexican and Canadian governments followed suit. Drug lords and paramilitary groups occupied several of the more distant towns and cities. Any supply centers more than 2 moves away from a home supply center are occupied by a neutral standing army that will disband if it is dislodged.

13. The victory condition is 100 SCs (out of 277).

All other Diplomacy rules apply as normal.

Small map missing names around Vermont/Maryland area
Technostar (1000 D)
17 Sep 17 UTC
That's intentional. The small map is simply too small to fit names in that region.
Technostar - love how this is all coming together. Looks amazing!

I think the 100 SC victory condition is sensible based on the size, but I'm foreshadowing you'll probably get some disgruntled 2nd/3rd/4th place getters after a few games who'll feel a majority should be needed. But you can always change the victory condition later on if the community and yourself support the idea.

Well done!

Cool map. I like it. But I don't like too many powers on the board. You can play the one game for years. Besides, Oliver from vDip is online now too ;-).

Hmm, I'll see if I can get Oli to reopen the vDip lab. Michael_b would also find that useful, I am sure.
Seeing Balkans 1860 just happened, it wouldn't hurt. From what you've explained so far, its a pretty straight forward variant with no special rules so Oli should be receptive I'd expect.
Technostar (1000 D)

There is actually a surprising amount of stuff that needs some special code, though just about all of it has been used in another variant. Neutral standing armies, neutral colored centers, centers at sea, build anywhere/start with build, and transform orders already exist in an easy-to-modify form elsewhere on vDip and can just be thrown in with the variant. The only new piece of code is merging a 3-layered PHP map together instead of 2 for both a large map and a small map. While I have no knowledge of PHP coding, I can't imagine it is anything too complicated. It's certainly not a colonial build rule or anything like that.
Have you had any discussions with Oli about bringing it across?

Technostar - dont waste time on the small map. Just get the large map working, like WWIV, imperial and known world you can then put the large map into a resizeable window in the browser.

@Amby I have already gotten in contact with him and he helped me set up my own private instance of vDip for testing and dev purposes.

@Kaner Hmm, perhaps I should have considered that before I finished making the small map. I guess I'll just code in the large map.

HowTo make a new variant?
As far as I understand Oliver's full instruction about variant creation is lost. So we are now to find all the information at different interbet resource and make up a new full instruction in the end.
Of course guys these issues you know already:

Site Glitch for Mobile
Today when I tried to log onto this site on my smartphone using 3G, I received this message: "Error Triggered: Column 'ip' cannot be null." It was fairly annoying as it caused me to NMR in one of our test games.

However, I think it might be fixable, because the same glitch doesn't appear on vDiplomacy.com, only here. Do you know what the problem is, Flame?
